Quote of the Day: MFK Fisher on Travel

Perhaps not the most sensitive suggestion for those of us who can't afford to fly to Lisbon, let alone Djakarta, or for those who don't have access to anything but hamburgers. Still, I like the sentiment:

"There is always reward in travel: I aim to assault my own clan with as much of it as possible, to keep them malleable to the world's tempers. But a little child can fly from here to Djakarta and then on to Lisbon and not stir one pace from his path of hamburgers-and-Coke, if his parents do not care enough to push him off it. He can live and die."

-from "Consider the End," Gourmet, October 1958

When Melinda and I were trekking around Portugal and Spain she was reminiscing about being there as a child and only eating ice cream bars called "Callipo's." When we were there, though, we tried to eat whatever the local specialties were.

Were they push pops? I grew up eating something that I think had that same name. Ah, foreign junk food.

I think so. She was on a mission to eat at least one before we left Spain!

My family and I traveled to dozens of foreign countries while I was growing up, and no matter where we were, my mom always found a cheeseburger and fries.

With the best of intentions of starting "The Gastronomical Me" last weekend, I released it from "the stack" and traveled with it, but time got away from me, and the cover remained closed...thanks for the inspiration to try again this week!
